Abstract

In this talk I will give an overview of the recent result for alpha_s by the ALPHA collaboration, based on the non-perturbative decoupling of heavy quarks. In this novel strategy the decoupling of heavy quarks is exploited to match Nf-flavor QCD and the pure Yang-Mills theory. Through this matching, the computation of the non-perturbative running of the coupling in QCD from the hadronic to the perturbative regime can be shifted to the computationally much easier to solve pure-gauge theory, thus allowing for greater precision. I will address the main sources of uncertainty that need to be controlled in this approach, and comment on the prospects of further reducing the current error on alpha_s.
