Dynamical dark energy, at variance with the cosmological constant, behaves like a medium which spontaneously breaks Lorentz invariance. Gravitational waves propagating in this medium may have a speed different from the speed of light and can decay into fluctuations of the medium. These effects are constrained by the recent experimental observations of gravitational waves and this sets severe bounds on dark energy models.
