The Generalized Landau Paradigm

Understanding the universal properties of quantum phases and transitions is of central importance in the study of quantum many body systems. Historically, global symmetries have provided the primary framework for a cohesive description of the landscape of quantum phases and their universal properties. This embodies the Landau paradigm. Recent years have seen the development of a hugely generalized understanding of global symmetries, leading to the study of non-invertible or categorical symmetries. In this talk I will describe an extension of the Landau framework that incorporates such generalized symmetries. I will describe new phases of quantum matter stabilised by such symmetries and their lattice model realisations.
