Thin-film synthesis and muon spectroscopy for novel oxide quantum materials
This project combines advanced synthesis of epitaxial oxide heterostructures at the University of Zurich (UZH) with state-of-the-art muon spin spectroscopy at the Low Energy Muon (LEM) facility at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). Based at the Physics department of UZH in the group of Prof. Johanna Nordlander, you will develop new thin-film systems for spintronics and quantum magnetism with the goal of determining their magnetic behavior in prototype device structures with depth and/or lateral resolution as well as under operando conditions using muon spectroscopy.
Join Muoniverse
This work will be performed within the NCCR Muoniverse: a Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) dedicated to advancing muon science across particle physics, quantum materials, and applications ranging from energy research to cultural heritage. Muoniverse brings together 30 research teams from universities, research institutions, and museums in a highly collaborative network, supported by the Muoniverse Research School, which coordinates training, exchanges, and career development for PhD students and postdocs. What we're looking for
Muoniverse positions often serve as bridges between individual research groups and institutions, supported through dedicated measures. We are seeking candidates who thrive in such collaborative environments, enjoy connecting people and ideas across disciplines, and are comfortable working within networked structures. Your ability to contribute to a culture of openness and shared progress is as important as your technical expertise. Muoniverse is committed to promoting equal opportunities and diversity in science. It actively works towards a diverse scientific community and an inclusive work environment.
Your Profile
- Master’s degree in Condensed Matter Physics, Materials Science or similar
- Enjoys working in an international and interdisciplinary team environment
- Driven by curiosity, strong critical thinking skills and enjoys exploring the unknown
- High proficiency in English (written/spoken)
- Previous experience with materials synthesis and/or characterization is a plus
Application
Applications should include your CV, MSc/BSc transcripts, a letter of motivation as well as contact information for two references. Applications must be submitted via email with the subject line “Muoniverse F2 PhD position” to johanna.nordlander [at] physik.uzh.ch
Applications will be assessed continuously until the position is filled. The position is available from summer 2026.
Postdoc positions
We currently do not have any open postdoc positions, however we are happy to support excellent candidates in fellowship applications such as the MSCA postdoctoral fellowships and similar. For more information, please contact Prof. Johanna Nordlander and include your CV and a brief outline of your research idea/interests.
