Excess Events in XENON1T: published and featured in Physical Review D

In a search for solar axions, bosonic dark matter, and an enhanced neutrino magnetic moment, the XENON1T collaboration found an excess of events in the low-energy electronic recoil region.

The collaboration is not making any claims about its nature, as the source of these events is not yet known. The signature of the excess is similar to what might result from a tiny residual amount of tritium in the detector, but could also be a sign of something more exciting—such as the existence of solar axions or the indication of previously unknown properties of neutrinos. The results are now published in Physical Review D and featured in a Viewpoint article in the journal entitled “Dark Matter Detector Delivers Enigmatic Signal”. The results also yielded a flurry of theoretical explanations of the excess, a synopsis of which is featured in the Physical Review, entitled "Theorists React to Potential Signal in Dark Matter Detector".
