PhD positions

Applications are invited for 2 Ph.D. student positions in the Flavour Physics group of the University of Zurich (UZH). The group consists of 1 Professor, 3 senior scientists, 8 postdoctoral researchers, and 8 Ph.D. students. The group is involved in the LHCb, Mu3e, SND@LHC, and SHiP experiments.  The first Ph.D. student will focus on analysis and the second on hardware.

Analysis position: The successful candidate will work on Data Analysis in the LHCb experiment on searches for dark matter. The candidate will also have opportunities to take part in studies of rare decays and CP-violation, where our group is strongly involved, and to contribute to the development of GPU algorithms for LHCb's first-level trigger. LHCb is a particle physics experiment running at CERN's Large Hadron Collider and dedicated to the study of heavy flavour physics and CP violation.

Hardware position: The successful candidate will work on silicon pixel detectors in the LHCb and Mu3e experiments. Concerning the LHCb experiment, we are involved in the Mighty Tracker for the Upgrade II of LHCb. This student will be involved in R&D studies for HV-CMOS detectors (MightyPix). He/she will also be involved in tracking studies to understand the optimal detector layout.  In the Mu3e experiment, the student will participate in the installation and commissioning of the silicon pixel detector, which will allow him/her to get experience for the LHCb Upgrade II.  He/she will also possibly contribute to the Mu3e analysis in the last year of the PhD.

Both positions, which also involve teaching duties, are immediately available and will be open until filled. The positions are for the length of four years with a 6 months probation period. Applicants must have a Master degree (or equivalent) in Physics. In order to apply for this position please send an email attaching a CV, a motivation letter, and the contact details of two references.  For the analysis position please email  Prof. Nico Serra ( and Dr. Daniel Craik (  For the hardware position please email Prof. Nico Serra ( and Olaf Steinkamp (
