Pixel detector - Phase 2

Our groups contribute significantly to the conception, development, and construction of the CMS Phase-2 pixel system, a high-end pixel system able to cope with the harsh pileup at HL-LHC and maintain or improve the tracking capabilities of CMS for future physics analyses, which will take data from 2028 to 2040s [TDR]

Among the biggest improvement of the CMS Phase-2 pixel detector is the significant increase of acceptance in the forward region, extending the tracking acceptance from |η|<2.5 to 4. This is realized with the tracker Endcap PiXel detector (TEPX), a large-area pixel disk system that will be installed in addition to the barrel (TBPX) and forward (TFPX) pixel detectors. UZH and PSI are the leading institutes in the TEPX detector project. 

The TEPX system is composed by 4 double-disks on each side of the interaction point along the beam axis. Each disk features modules on both front and back side and is split in two half-disks. A prototype of a half TEPX disk is shown below. The increase of coverage to large pseudo-rapidity brings an enhancement in the vertex position resolution and hence improves the reduction of pileup. Additionally, part of the TEPX will be used to monitor the instantaneous luminosity with a precision aiming to 1%.

TEPX disk

UZH has designed and built this prototype PCB disk of detector modules for the TEPX detector (Tracker Extended PiXel detector).  The PCB transfers data and control signals as well as low-voltage and high-voltage power.  We have tested heat dissipation, high voltages, and signal integrity.
