We have several evidences that the Standard Model of particle physics is not the full story. One of the main evidences is the existence of Dark Matter. Most of the matter present in our Universe consists of particles which do not interact in the same way as Standard Model particles would. These matter is called Dark Matter. The picture shows the luminous matter of our galaxy (composed of ordinary Standard Model particles) compared to the huge Dark Matter halo (composed by unknown type of particles).

Another evidence that the Standard Model is not the final theory, is the evident asymmetry between matter and anti-matter in our Universe. While for each matter particle there is a corresponding anti-particle, our Universe (you, your house, the Earth, the Galaxies, ...) are composed by matter, with a negligible amount of anti-matter. The Standard Model fails to explain why the matter prevailed on the anti-matter in the evolution of the early Universe.

There are many models of physics beyond the Standard Model, which is often called New Physics. All these models predict the existence of new particles, not present in the Standard Model, which would have played a key role in the high-energy, high-density phase of the early Universe. In addition, New Physics theories provide possible candidates for Dark Matter. The main goal of modern particle physics is to find microscopic evidences of New Physics, which would guide us to understand which is the theory that complete the Standard Model.
