Event generators are used extensively in many LHC searches and therefore improving their theoretical accuracy is important in order to fully exploit the LHC potential. After a very brief overview of the basic concepts and approximations upon which these tools are built, I will explain how NNLO QCD computations can be matched with parton showers using the POWHEG and MiNLO methods. I'll show results obtained with this approach, highlight its limitations, and discuss how these limitations can be overcome through a novel method (MiNNLOPS) that we have recently introduced.
